Bravo iOS 11, Bravo!
49 percent of adults admit to texting and driving, even though 98 percent of adults say they know the practice is unsafe.
My new favorite feature in the latest iOS 11 update is the Do Not Disturb While Driving mode! I will be the first one to admit that I have looked at my phone while driving. Whether it was to search an address in Google Maps because I was totally lost and already late, to peek at that text that pinged, or to make a note for my grocery store run later. But of all those things, nothing is more important than being an attentive driver for my loved ones in my car and those in yours. For me, if my eyes and mind are not 100% focused on the road I am not 100% attentive. Singing with the radio, audio texting (even if I’m not actually looking at the screen), or even talking to my kids in the backseat takes my attention away from the road mentally. I am not 100% watching the road. Now this is not going to always prevent an accident from happening, but at least I know that I have the best chance possible to see something coming and try to stop or get out of the way. So please give yourself the best chance possible and use this new feature!
I love that Apple added this option to my phone. I don’t usually notice many of the changes after a phone update. The latest iOS 11 update had a few new features I love. First was the ability to customize the control center! As I was checking out my new options to add, I noticed a cute little car icon, Do not disturb while driving! I instantly got happy. I have been wanting something like this for years.
When we lived in Japan, I loved that people did not drive and use phones, even for talking!! We would see cars pulled over in the oddest spots only to see them talking on a cell phone as we passed. Mind you they have crazy skinny streets with no shoulders. So at first we were flabbergasted anyone would be hanging out there, until we were told it’s illegal to talk and drive. I know there are many debates about this, but I think most would agree it’s a huge issue today. So if you have an iPhone, please add this to your control center and use it. I’ve had it active for a week and I love not having the temptation to look at that silly phone.
How Does it Work
Do Not Disturb while driving(DNDWD) will automatically detect that you might be driving, and silence incoming notifications and keeps your iPhone screen dark. Notifications will not appear on the lock screen. You can configure a custom automatic reply in Messages for your Favorites that will let them know you are driving. That way you won’t feel pressured to immediately answer phone calls and text messages. They also have the ability to mark a message as ‘urgent’ on the chance that the notification needs to be let through. There may be a situation when DNDWD still becomes active (like when you are a passenger), you can easily unlock your phone and select “I’m not driving” allowing you to use your phone.
To Activate:
1. Go to Settings
2. Into Do Not Disturb
3. Scroll down to the bottom DO NOT DISTURB WHILE DRIVING heading.
4. Activate. You have 3 options Automatically, When connected to Car Bluetooth, or Manually. (I use the “Automatically” option and don’t even notice when it starts)
5. Go back to Do Not Disturb and set up Auto-reply To and Message. (I used the default message and have it auto-reply to my favorites only) Gives me peace of mind, knowing I’m not ignoring someone.
After you set it up, you can add it to the control center to access a bit easier. I hope you will love this feature as much as I do.
